Purpose: To deliver projects of all sizes from initial enquiry to completion, provide ongoing support to existing customers and work closely with the Directors to develop new business.

Working for an independent systems integrator based in Northamptonshire, providing bespoke, high quality industrial control systems primarily to the recycling industry. We offer a turnkey service including electrical design, software, manufacture, installation and commissioning with ongoing system support. As a small business, we are seeking a Control Systems Project Engineer to deliver projects of all sizes from initial enquiry to completion, provide ongoing support to existing customers and work closely with the Directors to develop new business. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who would enjoy finding technical solutions to meet often challenging and complex customer requirements, both independently and as part of a small team

Depending on size, project delivery may be undertaken independently, leading a small team, or working in partnership with others of a similar level of expertise. In most projects assigned to you, you would assume responsibility for ensuring projects are delivered to the customer's expectations and schedule, on budget, and to the appropriate industry and safety standards. The role therefore demands a significant level of initiative and autonomy, yet equally an ability to work with others.

Office and Workshop Responsibilities and Duties:

Under direction of the Directors:

  • To assess customer specifications from sales enquiries
  • To propose engineering solutions
  • To write budget material lists, prepare costs and quotations
  • To produce electrical circuit diagrams using CAD or similar software
  • To write HMI and/or PLC and/or SCADA software, operating descriptions and system manuals
  • To assemble, wire-check and test electrical control panels
  • To maintain a tidy and safe working environment
  • To follow Health and Safety Policy and associated risk assessments and method statements
  • To supervise and/or manage a colleague*
  • To undertake any tasks as may be reasonably directed by the Directors.

Customer Site Responsibilities and Duties:

  • To carry out site surveys in preparation for quotations and project delivery
  • To carry out installation for smaller projects
  • To oversee sub-contracted installation teams on larger projects, including monitoring visits
  • To carry out commissioning on projects of all sizes
  • To carry out modification and maintenance work on existing systems
  • To maintain a tidy and safe working environment
  • To follow Health and Safety Policy and associated risk assessments and method statements
  • To supervise and/or manage a colleague*
  • To undertake any tasks as may be reasonably directed by the Directors.

Telephone and Online Support Responsibilities and Duties (including out of hours):

Under direction of the Directors, every third week including weekends:

  • To provide telephone support and advice to assist customer's shift supervisors and maintenance personnel with system fault diagnostics
  • To undertake remote online access to customer's systems to support fault diagnostics
  • To perform minor online modifications to customer's systems in order to rectify a fault
  • To contact the Technical Director if a fault cannot be resolved to the customer's satisfaction.

Person Specification: Control Systems Project Engineer

Qualifications:

  • Electrotechnical Level 3 qualification (NVQ) or equivalent
  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
  • ECS Gold Card
  • MEWP Training
  • Harness Training
  • GCSE Grade 4 or C / Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Mathematics plus GCSE Grade 4 in a science-related subjectFull, clean driving license (You must declare anything that could impact on insurance). Please note that the company has a pool van for business use.

Knowledge of:

  • PLC / HMI / SCADA software, with at least one of Siemens, Omron, Allen Bradley, Movicon
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Willingness to learn new skills as required
  • Willingness to attend training.

Experience of:

  • independently writing PLC / HMI / SCADA software, with at least one of Siemens, Omron, Allen Bradley. Movicon, with completion of relevant training
  • producing electrical circuit diagrams using CAD software or similar
  • independently assembling and testing electrical control panels
  • installing, commissioning and maintaining electrotechnical systems
  • maintaining a safe working environment
  • following risk assessments and method statements
  • carrying out site surveys
  • overseeing sub-contracted installation teams
  • finding technical solutions to problems
  • writing a quotation, system manual and technical documentation
  • delivering projects from start to completion
  • independently working on customer sites
  • liaising with customers
  • writing a risk assessment and method statement.
