Senior Manufacturing Engineer (Automation)

Russell Taylor are looking to recruit for a Senior Manufacturing Engineer in Bath. This is an exciting opportunity to take a blank canvass (brand new factory) and effectively design and implement the assembly process from scratch.

The successful candidate will be able to use their experience to design world class manufacturing processes for a predominantly assembly based factory. Initially this will be to equip our Client's new factory using the best available practices and equipment to produce their products.

Subsequently the successful candidate will introduce new products to the factory and will be expected to take responsibility for maintaining existing automated (as well as associated manual and semi-automated) processes to the established level of safety, quality, cost and delivery. Solving problems in the current work environment is a normal part of our continuous improvement process. It is anticipated that this person would work in project teams in the early stage of new product introduction to ensure that products are designed for manufacture and test. Interpreting product specification and engineering requirements. Working to a project time plan and within budget.


* Design, specify and implement electrical and mechanical equipment for assembly and test processes. Taking into account best engineering practice, design for manufacture/test, lean manufacturing, health and safety requirements, environmental requirements and product quality whilst ensuring compliance with external regulatory bodies and meeting internal requirements.
* Use software to integrate equipment and automate the handling of information.
* Identify new technologies and make recommendations to the production engineering team.
* Provide breakdown support and improve reliability of machines and equipment.
* Provide technical support for maintaining process instructions and documentation control.
* Actively assist in problem investigation and resolution.
* Raising capital applications and managing project implementation plans.

Time Scales:

- Year 1 - defining the manufacturing process and identifying the technologies needed
- Year 2- 4 - purchasing the equipment and managing the introduction in to the new factory
- Beyond - refining the process and part of the continuous improvement culture



* Able to demonstrate the application of engineering expertise
* Experience of or ability to learn 'Solid Edge' CAD package
* Experience of or ability to learn 'LabVIEW' software package
* 5 years or more experience in a similar role and environment
* Excellent computer skills, Excel/Access/Word


* Good awareness of continuous improvement techniques
* Knowledge of H & S legislation
* Knowledge of Environmental legislation
* Good awareness of continuous improvement techniques
* Experience of quality control, statistics and capability study
* Experience of MRP (Material requirements planning)



* Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, or similar


* IOSH Health & Safety qualification
* Continuous Improvement qualification
* Membership of a professional body such as IMechE
